Qandeel Baloch Case

ClosedSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

Qandeel Baloch, one of Pakistan's best-known social media figures, was killed by her brother at the family home in Multan in July 2016. The brother publicly confessed, saying her posts had brought "dishonour" to the family. The killing accelerated the passage in October 2016 of a long-debated law against so-called honour killings, mandating prison even if the family pardons the killer. He was sentenced to life in 2019. But in February 2022 the Lahore High Court acquitted him, accepting the family's pardon and questioning the validity of his confession — a ruling sharply criticised by women's rights advocates.
