2012 Delhi Bus Attack ("Nirbhaya" Case)
On the night of 16 December 2012 in Delhi, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, known publicly by the pseudonym "Nirbhaya" (fearless), was sexually assaulted by six men on a moving bus and left gravely injured by the roadside. She died on 29 December in a Singapore hospital. The attack triggered nationwide protests, and in April 2013 India passed a law imposing much tougher penalties for sexual violence. One accused was found dead in jail and the juvenile accused served three years in a reform facility. Death sentences for the four adult men were upheld by the Supreme Court in 2017 and carried out at Tihar Jail on 20 March 2020.
