The Murder of Naina Sahni ("Tandoor Case")
On the night of 2 July 1995 in New Delhi, Sushil Sharma, a Youth Congress leader, shot dead his wife Naina Sahni at their home and then tried to destroy the evidence at a restaurant. The crime came to light when patrolling police noticed smoke rising from the restaurant; the perpetrator fled and surrendered a few days later. The case was one of the first major trials in India in which DNA and ballistic analysis played a decisive role. The trial court imposed the death penalty in 2003, upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2007. India's Supreme Court commuted it to life imprisonment in 2013. He was released by court order in December 2018.
