YOZGAT — 1995 · Major Tragedy
The Sorgun Mine Disaster: Firedamp at the Madsan Pit
On 26 March 1995, a firedamp explosion occurred at a coal mine run by Madsan (Matsan) Mining in the Sorgun district of Yozgat. In the fire and collapse that followed, 38 of the 45 miners working underground were killed; seven were rescued with injuries. Rescue teams struggled to reach the miners because of the fire and the collapse, while relatives waited at the pit head for news. The disaster was recorded as one of the worst coal mining accidents outside Zonguldak and became a frequently cited turning point in debates on workplace safety. Thirty years on, local people still speak of it as a 'black day'. The miners who died are commemorated in Sorgun every 26 March.
