SREBRENICA — 1995 · Major Tragedy
The Srebrenica Genocide
On 11 July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces under General Ratko Mladić entered Srebrenica, which the UN had declared a 'safe area'. Some 20,000 people sought refuge at the UN peacekeeping base at Potočari to the north. Over the following days more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were separated and killed, while women and others were forcibly removed from the area. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Court of Justice found the killings to constitute genocide. On 22 November 2017 the ICTY sentenced Mladić to life imprisonment for genocide and crimes against humanity, a sentence upheld in 2021. The memorial cemetery at Potočari bears the victims' names, and identification of remains continues.
