Senirkent Flood Disaster

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Around 20:10 on the evening of 13 July 1995, a major flood struck the Senirkent district of Isparta. Heavy rain on Kapı Dağı, the mountain directly above the town, sent soil, rock and debris down into the town centre as a mudflow. According to records of the Senirkent District Governorate, 74 people died and 209 homes were left uninhabitable. The disaster hit hardest in neighbourhoods built on slopes and close to stream beds. Afterwards the state launched investment to repair the damage, built new housing for those affected, and carried out flood and erosion control works in the upper catchment. The Senirkent flood is remembered every year on its anniversary as one of the deadliest floods in the recent history of Turkey's Lakes Region.
