SARAJEVO — 1994 · Major Tragedy
The Markale Market Massacre
Around midday on 5 February 1994 a mortar shell landed in the middle of the crowded Markale open-air market in besieged Sarajevo. Sixty-eight people were killed and 144 injured, making it the single deadliest attack of the siege and accelerating international moves towards NATO intervention. Which side fired the shell was initially disputed. In the case against the commander of the Bosnian Serb corps besieging the city, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia found that the shell had been fired from territory under that corps' control; the commander was sentenced to life imprisonment on appeal. The market area was hit again in August 1995.
