The Baoyuanfeng Poultry Plant Fire

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 3 June 2013 an electrical short circuit in the main workshop of the Baoyuanfeng poultry processing plant in Dehui, Jilin province, ignited flammable polyurethane foam insulation. Flames and intense heat triggered explosions in ammonia equipment and pipelines. About 395 workers were in the plant, and workers said all but one of the exits were locked. The disaster killed 121 people and injured 76. A State Council investigation identified the illegal use of flammable building materials, locked safety exits and the lack of safety training as the main causes, citing negligence by plant managers and the officials responsible for inspections. The fire reignited debate over workplace safety in China.
