The Murder of Lawyer Carmel Chircop
Lawyer Carmel Chircop was shot dead at a garage complex in Birkirkara on the morning of 8 October 2015. The case went unsolved for years. Testimony given in exchange for a pardon by a man involved in the Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination also shed light on Chircop's murder. Prosecutors argued that the killing was commissioned over a debt of around 750,000 euros that a businessman owed Chircop. At the trial that concluded in June 2025, the two men who carried out the murder and the man who commissioned it were sentenced to life imprisonment; the same defendants were also convicted of supplying the bomb that killed Caruana Galizia. On 22 January 2026 the Court of Appeal rejected all grounds of appeal and upheld the convictions.
