The Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin

SolvedSources: CLast updated: 14 October 2026

On 4 November 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was shot and killed while leaving a peace rally he had attended in Tel Aviv. The gunman, Yigal Amir, was apprehended at the scene and openly stated that he had acted because he opposed the peace process. Tried in 1996, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The assassination opened a prolonged period of reckoning in Israel over political violence and social polarization; an official state commission that examined the case reported on security failures.
