BEIRUT — 2005 · Murder
Assassination of Rafic Hariri
Former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri was killed on 14 February 2005 when a massive truck bomb struck his convoy near the St George Hotel in Beirut; 21 others died and hundreds were injured. The assassination triggered the mass protests known as the "Cedar Revolution" and the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon. The UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon convicted a Hezbollah member in absentia in August 2020; in March 2022 its appeals chamber convicted two more. None of the convicts was handed over. Hezbollah denied the charges, and the tribunal said it found no evidence that the group's leadership directly ordered the attack.
