The Murder of Rebecca Dykes
Rebecca Dykes, 30, who worked for the UK Department for International Development at the British Embassy in Beirut, went missing in December 2017 after leaving a bar in Beirut's Gemmayze district in a ride-hailing car. Her body was found on 16 December 2017 beside a mountain highway outside the city. Lebanese police quickly arrested the driver with the help of security cameras. On 1 November 2019 he was convicted of murder and sexual assault and sentenced to death. Lebanon's highest court overturned the death sentence in February 2020, while the conviction itself stood. After the killing, the UK Foreign Office restricted its staff from using the ride-hailing service.
