Death of Mahsa Amini in Custody
Mahsa (Jina) Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman visiting Tehran with her family, was detained by the morality police on 13 September 2022 for allegedly breaching headscarf rules. She collapsed at a detention centre, was taken to hospital and died on 16 September. Iranian officials attributed her death to a pre-existing medical condition, an account her family rejected. Her death sparked months of nationwide protests under the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom". In March 2024 the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission reported that her death was unlawful and caused by physical violence. No official has been held accountable.
