The Meryem Çap case
On 22 August 2023, in Istanbul's Bayrampaşa district, Meryem Çap was shot and killed by her husband. The Istanbul 35th Heavy Penal Court convicted the defendant of 'aggravated intentional homicide' and sentenced him to aggravated life imprisonment, applying no discretionary reduction. The defense's requests for a reduction on grounds of unjust provocation and for the application of more favorable provisions were rejected at both the appellate and cassation stages; the Court of Cassation's 1st Criminal Chamber unanimously upheld the ruling in 2026, making it final. The ruling is regarded as a precedent for upholding one of the harshest sentences given without reduction in cases of femicide.
