The 'Ice-Cream Lady' Case of Meidling
In June 2011, during repair work in the cellar of an ice-cream parlour in Vienna's Meidling district, the remains of two men were found in a walled-up freezer. It emerged that the owner, Estibaliz Carranza, had killed her husband in 2008 and her live-in partner in 2010. Carranza fled Vienna after the discovery but was soon arrested in Italy and extradited to Austria. Dubbed the 'Eislady' (Ice-Cream Lady) by the press, the case became one of the most talked-about in Austria's recent criminal history. On 22 November 2012 she was sentenced to life imprisonment and committal to a secure institution; the verdict became final in 2013.
