ZAGREB — 2008 · Murder
The Assassination of Ivo Pukanić
Ivo Pukanić, editor-in-chief of the weekly Nacional, and the magazine's marketing director Niko Franjić were killed on the evening of 23 October 2008 on Stara Vlaška Street in central Zagreb, when a bomb placed on a motorcycle parked near the magazine's offices exploded. The killing deeply shook Croatia over organised crime and press safety, and the government announced new anti-organised-crime measures. The investigation spanned Croatia and Serbia, and eight people with organised crime links were indicted. In November 2010 a Zagreb court sentenced six defendants to prison terms ranging from 15 to 40 years.
