MÓR — 2002 · Murder
Mór Bank Massacre
On 9 May 2002 two armed robbers entered a bank branch in the Hungarian town of Mór, killed all eight people inside and escaped with about 7.3 million forints. The crime shocked Hungary as one of the gravest in its history. Two men arrested a few months later were convicted on circumstantial evidence. In February 2007, however, a man caught for another murder said he had taken part in the Mór robbery, and the case was reopened; the weapons used were found at the home of one of the new suspects. After the main perpetrator died in custody in 2007, his accomplice was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2010, a verdict made final by the Supreme Court in 2011. The wrongly convicted defendant was acquitted in 2009.
