The Zámocká Street Attack

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the evening of 12 October 2022 a 19-year-old gunman opened fire outside Tepláreň, a bar frequented by LGBT+ people on Zámocká Street in Bratislava's old town. Juraj Vankulič and Matúš Horváth were killed and a woman was wounded. The attacker was found dead the next day. Because of far-right, homophobic and antisemitic writings he had posted online, Slovak authorities reclassified the case from a hate-motivated murder to an act of terrorism, the first officially designated terrorist attack in modern Slovak history. The attack triggered large protests and debate over LGBT+ rights in the country.
