The Devínska Nová Ves Shooting

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 30 August 2010, a 48-year-old man opened fire in and around his apartment building in the Devínska Nová Ves district of Bratislava. Seven people died and seventeen were injured; five of the dead belonged to one family and one was a woman who happened to be passing. Wounded in an exchange of fire with police, the gunman then took his own life. Investigators cited neighbourly disputes as the probable motive but no definitive explanation was given. Authorities' failure to inform the public for hours and witness accounts of a slow, disorganised police response drew criticism. It remains the deadliest shooting in Slovak history.
