VIENNA — 2020 · Major Tragedy
Vienna Shooting Attack
On the evening of 2 November 2020, the last night before Austria's coronavirus restrictions took effect, a 20-year-old gunman opened fire around Seitenstettengasse and the nightlife area known as the 'Bermuda Triangle' in central Vienna. Four civilians were killed and 23 people injured. The attacker was shot dead by police about nine minutes after the attack began. It emerged that he had been jailed in 2019 for trying to travel to Syria to join ISIS, had been released early on parole and had taken part in a deradicalisation programme. The attack raised questions about failures by Austria's intelligence service in assessing warnings.
