The Killing of Arkan at the InterContinental Hotel
Željko Ražnatović, "Arkan", leader of the "Tigers" paramilitary unit in the Yugoslav wars and indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, was shot dead in the lobby of Belgrade's InterContinental Hotel on 15 January 2000. Two men with him were also killed. After an earlier verdict was overturned, a Belgrade court in October 2006 sentenced the gunman, a junior police officer, and two accomplices to long prison terms. The gunman fled to South Africa before serving his sentence and fought extradition for years. Arkan's death also effectively ended an investigation into crimes in Kosovo.
