In 1999, journalist and publisher Slavko Ćuruvija was killed in an armed attack outside his home in Belgrade, Serbia. The case went unresolved for years. In 2021, four former security officials were convicted for their roles in the killing and sentenced to a combined 100 years in prison. The ruling was regarded as an important precedent in the fight against impunity for the killing of journalists in the region.
