The Abduction and Murder of Ex-President Ivan Stambolić
Former Serbian president Ivan Stambolić was abducted while jogging in Belgrade's Košutnjak park on 25 August 2000 and was never seen again. His disappearance came in the final weeks of Slobodan Milošević's rule and remained unsolved for two and a half years. In March 2003, during a sweeping crackdown launched after the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, police announced that members of the Special Operations Unit (JSO) had killed Stambolić on Fruška Gora the day he was taken; his remains were found in a pit. In July 2005 unit members and accomplices were sentenced to prison terms of up to 40 years, the court finding that the order had come from Milošević.
