BELGRADE — 2003 · Murder
The Assassination of Zoran Đinđić
Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić was shot dead by a sniper on 12 March 2003 as he stepped out of his car at the rear entrance of the government building in Belgrade. After the death of the symbol of post-Milošević reform, a state of emergency was declared and more than 11,000 people linked to organised crime were detained in 'Operation Sabre'. The investigation exposed links between members of the former 'Red Berets' special police unit and the Zemun clan. In May 2007 Belgrade's Special Court sentenced 12 defendants to a combined 378 years; the gunman and the organiser received 40 years each.
