PODGORICA — 2004 · Murder
The Assassination of Journalist Duško Jovanović
Duško Jovanović, owner and editor-in-chief of the opposition daily Dan, was shot with an automatic weapon as he got into his car outside the paper's offices in Podgorica shortly after midnight on 27-28 May 2004. His paper had reported on organised crime and circles close to power; he had received repeated threats and the office was set on fire in 2003. A former athlete was tried for complicity and sentenced in 2015 to 19 years in prison. But who planned, ordered and carried out the killing has never been established. In 2025 the Montenegrin government offered a one-million-euro reward for information.
