The Jorge Matute Johns Case

UnsolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Jorge Matute Johns, a 23-year-old forestry engineering student, was last seen in the early hours of 20 November 1999 at the La Cucaracha nightclub in Talcahuano and never came home. The investigation launched after his family's complaint became one of Chile's most debated cases. More than four years later, on 12 February 2004, remains found on the banks of the Biobío River at kilometre 22.6 of the Ruta de la Madera were confirmed to be his. The case was closed without convictions in 2010, reopened with new evidence in 2014, and the body was re-examined. In 2015 the official cause of death was amended to pentobarbital poisoning. Even so, no one has been convicted; several suspects have since died and the case remains unsolved.
