Disappearance of Journalist Jean-Pascal Couraud
Jean-Pascal Couraud (JPK), former editor-in-chief of the Tahiti daily Les Nouvelles and known for critical reporting on the local government's political and financial dealings, disappeared on the night of 15–16 December 1997; his body was never found. Suicide was initially suggested, but a murder investigation was opened after his family filed a complaint in 2004. The inquiry examined allegations against former members of a security unit set up under the local government and disbanded in 2006, as well as a personal-relationship angle. Charges have been brought against several people since 2013, but there is no final verdict. In August 2026 the investigating judge closed the investigation phase.
