The Murder of the Marquesses of Urquijo

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 1 August 1980 the Marquess and Marchioness of Urquijo, from one of Spain's leading banking families, were shot dead in their sleep at their mansion in Somosaguas near Madrid. The investigation focused on the couple's son-in-law, whom a court sentenced in 1983 to 53 years in prison, a verdict upheld by the Supreme Court in 1985. The judgment stated that he had acted "alone or with others"; no possible accomplice was ever convicted. The convicted man was found dead in his cell in 1988, and his death also caused controversy. Missing evidence and retracted confessions have kept the case among Spain's most debated crimes.
