CAPE TOWN — 1993 · Murder
The Killing of Amy Biehl
Amy Biehl, a 26-year-old American Fulbright scholar, was working at the University of the Western Cape. On 25 August 1993, while dropping friends off in Gugulethu, her car was stoned and, at a moment of high political tension, she was pulled from it by a crowd and killed. In 1994 four young men were convicted of murder and sentenced to 18 years each. Her parents supported their amnesty application to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was granted in 1998. The Amy Biehl Foundation set up by the family ran youth programmes in the townships, and two of the men later worked for it.
