The Van Breda Family Murders
On 27 January 2015, at the Van Breda family home on the secure De Zalze golf estate in Stellenbosch, the mother, father and elder son were killed and the family's 16-year-old daughter was seriously injured. The surviving 20-year-old son said three masked intruders had entered the house, but no sign of forced entry or of outside attackers was found on the guarded estate. On 21 May 2018 the Western Cape High Court convicted him of murder, attempted murder and obstruction of justice, and on 7 June 2018 he was sentenced to three life terms plus further prison time. The judge said the attacks showed an almost unprecedented disregard for his own family.
