CAPE TOWN — 2010 · Murder
Murder of Anni Dewani
Swedish woman Anni Dewani was shot dead on 13 November 2010 while on honeymoon in Cape Town, after the taxi she and her husband were in was hijacked in the Gugulethu township. Her husband was released unharmed. The taxi driver pleaded guilty, claiming the husband had arranged the killing as a fake robbery, and was jailed for 18 years in December 2010. Two more men received long sentences in 2012. The husband, extradited from Britain, went on trial in 2014, but in December 2014 the court threw out the case, finding the driver's testimony unreliable, and he was acquitted. The victim's family still feels the full truth has not emerged.
