HONG KONG — 2014 · Murder
The Wan Chai Double Murder
In late October and early November 2014 two young Indonesian women were killed in an upscale flat in Hong Kong's Wan Chai district. Both had come to Hong Kong as domestic workers and later turned to sex work. The killer was a British investment banker employed by an international bank; the bodies were found on 1 November 2014 after police were called to the flat. At trial the jury unanimously rejected his defence of diminished responsibility due to alcohol and drug use. Convicted of both murders in November 2016, he received two life sentences; his appeal was rejected in February 2018. The case prompted international debate about the vulnerability of migrant domestic workers and sex workers in Hong Kong.
