The Hello Kitty Murder — A Teenage Girl's Report
In March 1999 in Hong Kong, a 23-year-old woman was abducted by three men over a debt dispute and taken to a flat on Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. She was held there for weeks and mistreated, and died in mid-April. The crime came to light in May 1999 when a 14-year-old girl connected to the perpetrators went to the police. The case takes its name from the Hello Kitty-themed doll in which remains were found. Because forensic examiners could not establish the exact cause of death, the three defendants were convicted in 2000 not of murder but of manslaughter, and sentenced to life imprisonment. One of them later had his sentence reduced to 18 years and was released in 2014.
