The Sudden Death of Bruce Lee

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Martial artist and film star Bruce Lee died suddenly in Hong Kong on 20 July 1973, aged 32. That day he had gone to a colleague's flat in Kowloon Tong to discuss a film project; complaining of a headache, he took a painkiller, lay down and never woke up. He was dead on arrival at hospital, and the cause was found to be cerebral oedema. An inquest in September 1973 returned a verdict of death by misadventure, attributing it to hypersensitivity to the painkiller. His death, young and at the height of his fame, fuelled decades of conspiracy theories and talk of a 'curse'. A medical study published in 2022 suggested the death may have been caused by hyponatremia linked to excessive water intake.
