SANTIAGO — 1973 · Murder
The Murder of Víctor Jara
Chilean singer-songwriter and theatre director Víctor Jara was detained at the Technical University where he worked the day after the military coup of 11 September 1973 and taken to the Estadio Chile (now Estadio Víctor Jara), where thousands of prisoners were held. Jara was killed on 16 September 1973; his body was found days later near a cemetery. The autopsy recorded numerous gunshot wounds. Jara became a symbol of repression under military rule in Chile. In 2018 eight former officers were convicted of murder and kidnapping, and Chile's Supreme Court upheld the verdicts in August 2023. A former lieutenant living in the U.S. was found liable in a Florida civil case in 2016 and deported to Chile in 2023.
