BUENOS AIRES — 1974 · Murder
The Assassination of General Carlos Prats
General Carlos Prats, former commander-in-chief of the Chilean army and a minister in Salvador Allende's government, went into exile in Argentina after the September 1973 coup. On the night of 30 September 1974, as he returned home in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, a bomb planted under his car exploded, killing him and his wife Sofía Cuthbert. The assassination was one of the first operations by DINA, the Pinochet regime's secret police, against opponents abroad. In 2000 a DINA agent was sentenced to life imprisonment in Argentina for the murder. In Chile, DINA's former chief and senior officers were charged in 2003 and later convicted. The case became a symbol of cross-border political killings under Operation Condor.
