REYKJAVÍK — 1974 · Unsolved Case
The Guðmundur and Geirfinnur case
In 1974, two men disappeared in Iceland in separate incidents several months apart. Six people were taken into custody in the investigation and questioned under prolonged isolation; convictions were handed down between 1977 and 1980 based on confessions obtained during that process. Neither victim's body was ever found, and no physical evidence supporting the confessions could be produced. Reviews conducted over the following years showed that the conditions of the interrogations may have affected the defendants' memories and statements. In 2018, the Supreme Court of Iceland acquitted five of the convicted individuals. The case is regarded as the country's most significant miscarriage of justice; the fate of the two missing men remains unknown.
