The Birmingham Pub Bombings

UnsolvedSources: CLast updated: 14 October 2026

On 21 November 1974, bombs exploded almost simultaneously in two pubs in Birmingham, England, killing 21 people and injuring more than 180. Six men were arrested afterward and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1975. Over the following years it emerged that the confessions had been obtained under duress and that the forensic evidence was unreliable. In 1991 the Court of Appeal quashed the convictions; the six men were released after 16 years in prison and received compensation. The case led to the creation of an independent body in England to review criminal convictions. The actual perpetrators of the bombings were never brought to trial.
