REYKJAVÍK — 2017 · Murder
The Birna Brjánsdóttir Case
Twenty-year-old Birna Brjánsdóttir disappeared on the morning of 14 January 2017 after leaving a nightclub in central Reykjavík. After a week-long search she was found dead on the coast of the Reykjanes peninsula on 22 January 2017. The investigation focused on the crew of a Greenlandic fishing vessel docked in port. In September 2017 Reykjanes District Court convicted a Greenlandic fisherman of murder and drug smuggling and sentenced him to 19 years in prison. The appeals court upheld the verdict in November 2018. In Iceland, where murders are extremely rare, the case prompted nationwide mourning and solidarity.
