WÜRENLINGEN — 1970 · Unsolved Case
Swissair Flight 330 Bombing
On 21 February 1970, about nine minutes after Swissair Flight 330, a Convair CV-990, took off from Zurich for Tel Aviv, a barometrically triggered bomb exploded in its cargo hold. With electrical and control systems failing, the crew tried to return to Zurich, but the aircraft crashed into a forest near Würenlingen. All 47 people aboard, 38 passengers and 9 crew, were killed. The attack was attributed to a Palestinian militant group, although claims of responsibility were contradictory. The suspects were never caught and no one was ever convicted. The investigation was closed in 2000. In 2016 the Swiss parliament found no evidence for allegations of a secret deal between Switzerland and the PLO.
