BUCHAREST — 1970 · Serial Murder
The "Vampire of Bucharest" Case
In 1970–1971, a series of night-time attacks in Bucharest targeted women walking alone, mostly in rainy and windy weather. Four women died and more than ten were injured. In the case, dubbed the "Vampire of Bucharest" by the press, police made more than 2,500 arrests. The perpetrator was identified thanks to a medical certificate he left at one of the scenes and was arrested on 27 May 1971. Tried and sentenced to death, he was executed by firing squad on 23 October 1971. The later discovery that his father had also been linked to serial killings made the case one of the most studied in Romanian criminology.
