BUCHAREST — 2015 · Major Tragedy
The Colectiv Nightclub Fire
On 30 October 2015, pyrotechnics used during a metal band's concert at Bucharest's Colectiv club ignited flammable acoustic foam on the ceiling. In the fire, in a venue with a single exit, and in hospitals over the following weeks, 64 people died, including four band members. The club was found to have operated without proper permits and with safety deficiencies. The fire sparked mass anti-corruption protests and the government's resignation. A first-instance court convicted 13 people in 2019; in May 2022 an appeals court handed final prison sentences to eight people, including the club owners and officials.
