HITRINO — 2016 · Major Tragedy
The Hitrino Train Explosion
At about 05:40 on 10 December 2016 a freight train carrying propane-butane and propylene derailed at the station in the village of Hitrino, Shumen Province. Overturned tanker wagons struck power lines and exploded, setting the village ablaze. Seven people were killed and 29 injured, and about 50 buildings were destroyed or badly damaged. The entire village was evacuated over the risk of further blasts while a hazardous operation transferred the cargo. The government declared a day of national mourning, and the accident fuelled debate on rail safety and the transport of dangerous goods.
