BURGAS — 2012 · Major Tragedy
The Burgas Airport Bus Bombing
In the late afternoon of 18 July 2012 a bomb exploded on a bus at Burgas Airport that was to take newly arrived Israeli tourists to their hotels. There were 42 Israeli tourists on board; five of them and the Bulgarian driver were killed, along with the bomber, and more than 30 were injured. In February 2013 Bulgaria's interior minister said there was "well-grounded" evidence that Hezbollah was behind the attack. Europol supported the investigation. After lengthy proceedings, a Bulgarian court in 2020 sentenced two accomplices to life imprisonment in absentia.
