PIATRA NEAMȚ — 2020 · Major Tragedy
The Piatra Neamț Hospital Fire
On the evening of 14 November 2020 fire broke out in the COVID-19 intensive care unit on the second floor of Piatra Neamț Emergency Hospital. Ten patients, many on ventilators, were killed; the injured included two doctors who tried to rescue them. Early findings pointed to a short circuit in a medical device, and prosecutors opened an investigation. Coming after the 2015 Colectiv fire, the disaster revived debate over failing infrastructure in Romania's health system and political interference in hospital management; within months, deadly hospital fires also struck Bucharest and Constanța.
