LUXEMBOURG — 1984 · Unsolved Case
The Bommeleeër Bombings
Between May 1984 and April 1986 unidentified perpetrators known in Luxembourg as the "Bommeleeër" (bombers) carried out 18 bomb attacks. Targets included electricity pylons, the gendarmerie headquarters, the Palace of Justice, Findel Airport and the Kirchberg area during a European Council summit in 1985. No one was killed in the attacks, though several people were injured. Suspicions that people inside the security services were behind them caused a major national controversy. In 2012 a court ruled that two former gendarmes should stand trial, and proceedings began in 2013, yet the perpetrators and their motives are still not definitively known.
