MEXICO CITY — 1984 · Murder
The Murder of Journalist Manuel Buendía
Manuel Buendía, whose "Red Privada" column in Excélsior exposed corruption, organised crime and drug trafficking, was one of Mexico's most widely read columnists. On the evening of 30 May 1984, as he walked from his office to his car in the Zona Rosa, a man approached from behind and shot him; the gunman escaped on a motorcycle. For years the investigation stalled amid lost evidence and irregularities. In 1989 the former head of the DFS, the federal security agency of the time, and several agents were arrested. The former DFS chief was sentenced to 35 years and one agent to 25. Many journalists believe the real masterminds were never tried.
