MEXICO CITY — 2006 · Serial Murder
The "Mataviejitas" Murders
From the late 1990s to 2006, many elderly women living alone were killed in their homes in Mexico City. The press called the killer "Mataviejitas" (the little-old-lady killer). The perpetrator approached victims by posing as a government welfare worker, while police spent years searching with a mistaken profile. In January 2006 a former amateur wrestler was caught fleeing a crime scene; in March 2008 she was convicted of 16 murders and aggravated burglary and sentenced to 759 years. Prosecutors suggested the total number of victims could exceed 40.
