BUENOS AIRES — 1994 · Major Tragedy
The AMIA Bombing
On the morning of 18 July 1994 a vehicle packed with explosives blew up outside the building of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) in Buenos Aires. The building collapsed; 85 people were killed and more than 300 injured. The investigation into Argentina's deadliest attack was plagued by scandal: local defendants were acquitted in 2004 and the judge in charge was removed for misconduct in 2005. Argentine prosecutors alleged the attack was planned by Iran and carried out by Hezbollah. In April 2024 Argentina's Court of Cassation upheld that finding. In 2025 the way was opened for trial in absentia of the wanted suspects. After more than 30 years the case remains open without the perpetrators in custody.
