Caso Degollados — The Killing of Three Dissidents

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

During the Pinochet dictatorship, three Communist Party members were abducted in Santiago in the last days of March 1985: painter Santiago Nattino on 28 March, and AGECH teachers' union leader Manuel Guerrero and Vicaría de la Solidaridad worker José Manuel Parada on 29 March, taken outside the Colegio Latinoamericano. On 30 March 1985 the bodies of all three were found near Santiago airport in Quilicura. Judge José Cánovas's investigation pointed to DICOMCAR, an intelligence unit of the Carabineros. In August 1985 Carabineros commander General César Mendoza resigned from the junta and DICOMCAR was dissolved. After the return to democracy, sixteen people were convicted in 1994; the Supreme Court upheld life sentences for five police officers.
